P. V. Subramaniam, popularly known as Subbudu, a doyen among dance and music critics in India. Born on 27th March 1917, and in his career which spanned more than 50 years, Subbudu’s acerbic wit and deep knowledge of music made many readers look forward to his views.
The family members, to celebrate the commencement of the Centurion year, organized a “Bhajan Sandhya” on 1st May 2016 at the Rear Hall at Sri Devi Kamakshi Mandir, A-11, Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, Opposite, JNU East Gate, New Delhi – 110067.
The program commenced with invoking the blessings of Goddess Kamakshi by the lighting of the lamp by eminent dancer Shrimati Rama Vaidhyanathan.
The event was a great success as many of the music lovers and including from our colony, attended in large numbers. The audience were enthralled by the performance of devotional songs, called “Sangeetha Nama Sankirthanam” by members of the family of Subbudu, which he himself had composed.
Sri Subbudu was known for his encouraging young talents. The young Ms. Kaavya Joshi his great granddaughter rendered a Bhajan with utmost finesse while his granddaughter Ms. Poorvaja Kumar mesmerized the audience by her Abhang and a Hindi Bhajan. The young and brilliant Bharathanatyam dance prodigy Aditi Balasubramaniam was superb with a number on Lord Shiva. The other singers included Mrs. Ragini Kumar, Mrs. Lekha Joshi, Mrs. Radha Ramasubramaniam and Mrs. Sita Gurunath all also incidentally residents of our colony. Certainly, our colony has great talent.
The highlight of the event was “Bhajans and Abhagam by the renowned artist Smt. Lavanya Sundaram and her group, which was scintillating and made the “bakhtas” sway in ecstasy on every number she presented.
Mr. Krishna Kumar, who had conceptualized the event says that the family is proposing to make such events a regular feature and wants to promote the culture and the standard of music which Mr. Subbudu cherished throughout his life.
