As Son-In-Law see’s Shri Subbudu

It was suggested that having shared the best and the most cherished relationship as a son in law, I should introduce this souvenir on MR. P.V Subramanian, remembering Subbudu,2017’. I am sure how fair it may be appropriate but as to the nature of the relationship I enjoyed with him I nevertheless would want to believe it. To the world, Mr. Subbudu was “ a doyen among the performing arts”. “a legend”, “a Dhruvtara “ and a music and critic par excellence. Yes, you will all note this when you go on. But, SUBBUDU, always referred to as “Appa” by the family was perhaps only an ideal “Karta” who played many roles.

A father who was affectionate to all the family members but in this case of his daughter and grand-daughters, he showed that this relationship ranked among the best of all relationship and cherished them the most. And that is why daughters are adored in our family. He was a perfect friend. He was an ideal companion if he was among teenagers or among the middle-aged. He never felt he would come in the category of the “old” and would jokingly refer to the elders and the aged, as “oldies” notwithstanding the fact that he would be far older than them. A good father in law. The expression “ in law” was but a mere phrase, a formality in our relationship. I am indeed blessed to have had many silent supporter and confidante during many adversities and upheavals. I wonder why my relationship was qualified as “ in law” and I was recognized as only “son-in-law” If that be so, in the expression of Lord Denning, the law would be an ass”.

Though I would wish to say a lot about him, if I were to do so, I would be writing be a fairly voluminous book. This I purpose to do anyway in the immediate future. However, as of now, I would like to share one personal incident which may perhaps say everything about him. It was in the year 2001, in the Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, when we had a brush with “involved” side of Appa. He was to undergo a major surgery for removal of an internal organ. There definitely cause for concern Just before entering the Operation Theater and moments before being given anesthesia, the Doctor attempting to case the tense situation, overserved, “ Don’t worry all will be well”.

Appa, with his characteristic smile, retorted “ What is there to worry. If I come out of the operation theater, it is fine there is no problem. And if I don’t then it is their problem” . and pointed to his son and me who was standing beside him. Suddenly everything around seemed normal and just fine. My family and I are grateful to everyone who has helped us in remembering the days with “ Subbudu”.
